About Asansol

Asansol is one of the major industrial and urban regions of West Bengal. This city is the second largest city in West Bengal after Kolkata. The name ‘Asansol’ is derived from two words, Asan (a species of tree which generally grows thirty meters tall, is found on the banks of the Damodar River) and ‘sol’ (land rich in minerals). Asansol is known as ‘the city of brotherhood’, where the cultural harmony made a diverse way of life in this locality. It has evolved through the expansion of coal mining and industrial activities from the second decade of the nineteenth century. When the headquarter of Eastern Railway was chosen in Asansol, this area became crowded as well as economically developed rapidly. It is also an ideal place of cultural assimilation as the Marwari, Gujrati, Punjabi, Sindh and other non-Bengali community permanently became the inhabitance of this area. Nunias, Kurmis, Bilaspuris, Gorakshapuris were migrated for mine works in 19th and 20th centuries.It is situated on the left bank of the River Damodar and is well connected by the Eastern Railway and G.T. Road. Asansol is about 200 km north-west of Kolkata city. It enjoys the locational advantage between Kolkata metro city to the south-east and Dhanbad coal city in the west. Asansol city has a number of tourist places and offers enough tourist attractions to the visitors. Maithon Dam, a beautiful tourist spot about 22 km away from Asansol. Churulia, about 17 km from Asansol, is thebirthplace of great poet Kazi Nazrul Islam (the National poet of Bangladesh also). In September, thesky remains generally clear with an average temperature of 30’C. Light cotton clothes are sufficient.

How to reach Asansol by Air: Asansol is well served by the Kazi Nazrul Islam Domestic Airport, Andal to the major cities of India like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad.

•How to reach Asansol by Rail: The Asansol Railway Station is an important junction of the Eastern Railway and is located on the prestigious Howrah – Delhi main line. The station is the 8th busiest railway station in India in terms of train frequency and commuting. It is well connected with all the major cities of India.

How to reach Asansol by Road: Asansol is well connected with a good road network of the eastern
region and connected through National Highway 19. The distance between Asansol and Kolkata is
210 km, and between Dhanbad and Asansol is 70 km.
